Impressed by the beauty and elegance of the pitcher plants of the family Nepenthaceae, the author and his wife made annual trips for 12 years to Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, to study and photograph the numerous endemic pitcher plants in their natural, frequently remote, habitats. They were fascinated by the biological singularity of the nutrition, survival and propagation cycle of these plants, and exodigestion of proteins. The author also became increasingly attracted by the beauty of these plants’ homelands, the peaks, the highlands and lowlands of Borneo, which he visited with expert guides on many expeditions. In this book the pitcher (and plants) of all Nepenthes species of Sabah and Sarawak, and some endemic Kalimantan species, are illustrated. Their particularities, including many natural hybrids, are described. The threats to these wonderful tropical plants as well as possible ways of ensuring their survival in their original habitat are also discussed. The book will interest both scientists and naturalists as it endeavours to give a simple approach to this family of plants from the tropical forests of Borneo.

Or, the joy of seeing a rare spiderhunter at rhododendron flowers, a flock of hornbills magically appearing out of the mist, the delight of exploring the rainforest in flower and of finding pitcher-plants and orchids in secluded groves. Not tomention the discovery of tiny alpine flowers on the peaks of Mt. Kinabalu – Borneo’s highest mountain. The book, based on the author’s diaries, is beautifully illustrated by her own water-colour paintings and delicate line drawings. Its vivid impressions of plant and animal life illustrate a world that is fast disappearing. It is a personal and evocative account of one of the world’s last great wilderness’s, and of one of the richest and most complex habitats on earth.

Kinabalu in the tropics of SE Asia is a treasure trove for all those who study plants. It is a mountain with an impressive variety of tropical plants, such as Rafflesia, orchids and pitcher plants not found in Japan. The author, Takashi Sato, has a deep interest in the taking of many photographs. After almost thirty ascents of the mountain, ‘Flowers and Plants of Mt. Kinabalu’ is a personal testimony of his love for the mountain and it’s plants. It is an excellent book for understanding the rich and interesting flora of Mt. Kinabalu.

They trap and devour animals and provide homes for others, even making convenient daytime roosting sites for bats. Few plants can boast such a variety of bizarre features, but the Nepenthes of Borneo don’t stop there – there are many other facets of their biology that we still know very little about. On top of that, their main home is the steaming tropical forests of Borneo: on the summits of remote mountains, high up in the tops of trees, and even by the sides of roads in the major towns. This book investigates the Nepenthes of Borneo in detail, treating each of the species, their ecology, where and how they grow, and how they survive, and discussing the threats they face. Charles Clarke has been studying these plants for the last ten years, and has travelled to all corners of Borneo to research this book. A number of these plants are illustrated here for the first time, and much of the information presented is new to science. Scientists and lay people with an interest in the natural history of Borneo will find this book essential reading.

All the 36 species of pitcher plants currently known from the island of Borneo are covered in this lavishly illustrated second edition. The main focus of the book lies in the accounts of these species, written in an accessible style and including quotes from the works of the old explorers and collectors as well as personal anecdotes from the diaries of Susan Phillipps, whose delightful watercolours are widely used to illustrate the species. In the first edition (1996), 32 species were covered. The names of some of these have since been changed, new species have been discovered and described and a wider variety of natural hybrids have been illustrated. The taxonomy has been completely updated, largely following that of Cheek & Jebb (2001). The book has also been greatly enhanced by the excellent photographs of Ch’ien C. Lee, who has joined the team of Phillipps and Lamb for this second edition. The chapter on Discovery and History, with its fascinating insight into the role of pitcher plants in Victorian society with historical photographs and paintings, has been maintained, as have the chapters on Folklore, The Pitcher Plant and Ecology, which have been greatly updated and expanded with new information from research over the last 12 years, that makes it clear that these fascinating plants are even more complex that was thought when the first edition was written. The worldwide interest in pitcher plants that has exploded since the first edition means that many more people are growing these plants as a hobby, especially now that tissue-cultured material is available at very reasbnable prices; this has made the new chapter on Cultivation by Ch’ien C. Lee a useful addition. The non-scientific but informative style of the first edition has been maintained, and this, combined with the greatly increased number of excellent photographs, will make this book indispensable to the naturalist or hobbyist as well as the scientific researcher.

The results of these studies have been published in 2002 in a book Borneo: Its Mountains and Lowlands with Their Pitcher Plants. These treks gave the author and his wife frequent opportunities for close and friendly contacts with the peoples living there. They had especially good relations with the Iban and the Orang Ulu of Sarawak. Often during discussions with Europeans, stories and questions concerning the head-hunting days in times gone by (even though head-hunting was banned almost 100 years) were still frequent and Dr. Steiner realised that knowledge was quite scarce about the surprisingly highly developed culture of these peoples. The author collected his experiences with several tribes – the Iban, Melanau, Kenyah, Kayan, Kajang, Penan and also the Lun Bawang and Kelabit from the remote highlands to show that they still have a very colourful cultural life. In 2005 and 2006 he studied especially the upper Baram Ulu region and the Punan Bah tribe at the Rajang rapids between Kapit and Belaga. A large number of photographs document their active cultural life, covering painting, music and dancing, carving, beadwork, weaving and other handicrafts. He got the impression that he was assisting to document a vanishing culture, because influences of telecommunications, travel and increasing intrusion of the logging industry have influenced the traditions in most parts of this area of Sarawak. He made these frequent treks with his wife, who was an indefatigable traveller and very valueable help in all his studies. This publication will be of interest to naturalists, ethnologists, sociologists and friends of Borneo and the Far East in general.

The island can boast a dozen species including several of the most beautiful in the genus.Paphiopedilum rothschildianum and P. sanderianum were sensations when first discovered in late Victorian days, and they continue to amaze us with their spectacular flowers, the petals spreading to 30 cm across in the former and up to a metre long in the latter. We still know very little about these magnificent plants and their relatives in the wild. In this book our current knowledge of the taxonomy, distribution, ecology and biology of these extraordinary plants is considered. Nearly all of the Bornean species are naturally rare in the wild, and sadly some are now threatened with extinction unless their habitats can be better protected. Fortunately all can still be found in the wild at present and with our help will continue to flourish in their remote habitats.
