The country’s equatorial climate has encouraged the evolution of an exceptional number and variety of animal species, in Sabah and Sarawak as well as Peninsular Malaysia. This volume introduces the animals of Malaysia in a way never done before. There are many different environments for animals in Malaysia, including mangroves, mountainsides and rivers, former mining land, primary and secondary forest and open fields. The resulting diversity includes over 1,000 species of butterflies, more than 600 species of birds, 280 species of mammals, 140 species of snakes and 165 species of frogs and toads. Many of the species are endemic to Malaysia – they are not found anywhere else in the world. New species are constantly being identified, especially in the depths of the rainforest. This book explores this exciting world of animals, many of which are not only important economically, but valuable as part of the world’s gene bank. Each section of the volume deals with a major group of animals – mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, aquatic animals, chelicerates, myriapods and annelids, insects, and parasites -focusing on the main species in Malaysia, their habitats, characteristics, habits, and the roles they play in the ecosystem. A final section discusses the importance of conserving Malaysia’s animal diversity in the face of rapid industrialization and the commercial demands for animal products – and how the country is trying to achieve this aim. The text has been written by well-known academics and wildlife experts, and there are over 800 full-colour illustrations, including 200 drawings, specially commissioned.

It served ornithologists and birds-watchers well over a number of years, but has long been out of print. Many of the vernacular and scientific names have changed, new species have been added, and, sadly, some deleted. Over the past three years I have found the need for an up-to-date checklist and decided to produce one, drawing upon the latest available information. The names follow Sibley and Monroe (1990 and 1993), but their taxonomic order has not been adopted in this interim list as field guides following the order are not yet available for this area. The numbers in the first column refer to King et al (1975), the only current field guide covering the birds of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. Species thought to be extinct locally are not included. In the limited space available I have broadly defined the status of species by simple coding of parameters, with which the user will quickly become familiar. Five columns are provided to use the checklist at different localities. I am indebted to Dr. David Wells, of the University of Malaya for his invaluable help in verifying the list.

Since then, due to discoveries, vagrants and new understandings in taxonomy, the region’s bird list has increased by 76 species. This fully updated new edition covers all of the new additions and has revised artwork and text for many of the species included in the original work. 120 full-colour plates by a range of expert artists covering every major plumage variation. All 1,327 species covered in unprecedented detail. Accurate and up-to-date text covers the identification, voice, habitat and behaviour, range and status and breeding of all the species and distinctive suspecies of the region. A complete field and reference guide to Myanmar (Burma), Thailand. Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Also covers a wide range of species found in the Indian Subcontinent, China, Taiwan, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo and the Philippines. “This guide is a magnificent achievement, regionally without peer, and clearly the essential guide for future visitors to the region”

The judgements cover a wide range of cases, but apart from the usual run of cases involving common law such as contract and tort, there are decisions on land and forest laws, peculiar to Sabah and Sarawak, which are wholly different from those of Peninsular Malaysia, although in the case of land law the indefeasibility of title principle is common to both Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. There are also decisions involving native customary laws of Sabah and Sarawak and should prove interesting reading – a departure from decisions that one normally reads from The Malayan Law Journal, Current Law Journal and All Malaysia Reports. The judgements offer an insight into the law of the two Borneo states and its application to the every day life of the people there.

Sections that discuss handling snakes and treating snakebites, and answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about snakes. A list of snakes found in Peninsular Malaysia grouped by family name. An indexed distribution chart of snakes found in Southeast Asia. This book will also prove useful to home gardeners, hikers or nature lovers whose interests take them outdoors where they are likely to encounter snakes. Written for the general reader, it does not involve the complex method of snakes identification by scale counts and other technical descriptions of scale arrangements.
