Birds of the Sepilok Forest – a Photographic Guide

This is a neat little book of 110 pages has 200 colour photographs of birds seen at the Rainforest Discovery Centre and surroundings at Sepilok, near Sandakan on the E. Coast of Sabah, East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. 300 bird species have now been recorded, with 15 endemics, including the icon of¬† Borneo birds, the Borneo Bristlehead (see pic), which is easier to see here than elsewhere. Sepilok is only 20 minutes from Sandakan airport. It has a third generation canopy walkway, a heroic structure in steel, as steady as a rock, surrounded by scattered tall forest trees and a regenerating lower storey. Hornbills are common and easily seen.

The Rainforest Discovery Centre is proving to be one of the best birding sites in Borneo, due to its accessibility and its nearness to the¬† primary forest of¬† the 6,100 ha Sepilok Forest Reserve. The Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is just down the road.

The¬† photos in this book are of a high quality and the text informative, although some further work is needed on it. The Forestry Department in general and Dr Robert Ong (text) and Ced Prudente (photos) can be congratulated on a really handy pocket guide that does the business. BBooks looks forward to selling updated versions of this book for many years to come.

Today was the ceremonial launching of the long awaited book on the Honey Bees of Borneo, describing the research work of Prof. Nikolaus Koeniger, his wife Dr Gudrun Koeniger and Salim Tingek. All five species of honey bee occurring in Borneo are featured and abundantly photographed. This is an accessible, popular text with a lot of meat in it. Research work by this team over 25 years has given new insights into bee biology, including behaviour, predators, honey hunting and production.

Borneo, with 5 of the 9 species of honey bee found world wide, is the biodiversity hotspot for this group. Honey production world wide is base on the European, Asian and African species Apis mellifera, the Western Honey Bee, but as this beast suffers continuing large scale ‘colony collapse disorder’ (partly through apiary bees being stressed and not sufficiently outbred, it is suspected), the indigenous honeys of Borneo could become increasingly important. They are natural, organic and tasty – an invitation to all interested in healthy eating.

John Beaufoy,¬† Proprietor and MD of John Beaufoy Publishing¬† from the UK (left), and his Area Representative Ken Scriven (former CEO of WWF Malaysia) came to the shop in KK 2 days ago to show us the final mock up of¬† ‘Wild Sabah’,¬† a new volume by John (Mammals of Borneo) Payne.¬† This is a large format book with plenty of pictures of¬† Sabah wildlife, with emphasis on the mammals such as the orang-utan. Probably for sale on the internet in 2 months.

Dusun Riddles of Sabah

In the olden days of colonial Sabah, the indigenous Dusun people of North Borneo played riddles with one another while they planted young paddy shoots in the rice fields. The practice still continues to this day, but riddling has been brought into the homes as a much-loved form of entertainment for all, regardless of age and gender.

The Blue Spotted Peacock Swallowtail, Papilio karna. This is quite common and seems to prefer the lower slopes of the mountain ranges of Borneo.
Kipandi Butterfly Park has a fine range of orchids and pitcher plants as well as insects. It is open to the public. You can even go along at night and see lots of moths attracted to special lights

Hypolimnas bolina likes open sunny spaces close to trees. It is a feature of large gardens in suburban Kota Kinabalu. The male is very territorial and glides down from a high perch to inspect intruders, including people. Other butterflies get chased away.
