Smythies. From the time he began his forestry career there in 1934 until his last revision of these pages in 1999, his was one of the key influences in Burmese ornithology. Fewer than a score of important papers has appeared on Burmese birds since 1945, but birdwatchers have continued to add a trickle of new species to the list. These findings have been fully incorporated into the new edition. New taxonomic work on groups such as bushlarks and warblers has helped to push the total of birds recorded in Burma to virtually one thousand – amongst the richest in the world for a country of this size. The plates for this edition have been re-photographed from the original paintings, which survive after one of the most dramatic escape stories in ornithological history. These paintings help to document the changing birdlife described in the text, from the decline of the great waterbird colonies, of pelicans and cormorants, to the new wave of records produced by tourism and birdwatching, today.

The first edition, published in Kuala Lumpur in 1934, was a slim volume dealing with the commoner Malayan butterflies. The death of H.M. Pendlebury in 1945 left Dr Steven Corbet as sole author of the second edition, which was completely rewritten and much enlarged to include every Malaya butterfly known at that time. It was base on an exhaustive study of almost all the extant collections of Malayan butterflies, ranging from that made by J.G. Koenig (a pupil of Linnaeus) in 1779 to those made in prison camps and behind the enemy lines during the Japanese occupation. Dr Corbet’s untimely death in 1948 left the book incomplete, but under the editorship of his friend N.D. Riley, Keeper of the Entomological Department of the British Museum (Natural History), it was published in 1956. The third edition, published by the Malayan Nature Society in 1978, was revise by Lt. Col. J.N. Eliot in the light of taxonomic work done in the years following Dr. Corbet’s death. Now, 13 years later, as a result of new knowledge arising out of the increasing interest in butterflies throughout S.E. Asia, a new edition is due. Every species of butterfly known to occur in the Malay Peninsula and Singapore described in the text or identified in the accompanying keys, and illustrated by or or more figures. In addition there is profusion of line drawings featuring venation, genitalia and other structural characters. The 64 colour plates were take by the distinguished photographer and author, Bernard D’Abrera. Mention is made of other species occurring in the region which may be found in future in the Peninsula. Naturalists should be able now, with the aid of this volume, to identify any butterfly met with in the Peninsula, and they will also learn how much is known of their life histories.

A Dictionary of Malaysian Timbers was first published in 1982 under the “Malayan Forest Records No. 30″. As the book contains comprehensive information on most of the timbers and their uses in Malaysia, it has been immensely popular among timber traders, timber consumers, students, wood scientists, etc. As a result, the book went out of stock and in the early 1990s, a reprint of the book became necessary to cater to the continuous demand for the book. However, since the publication of the book in 1982, a lot of new information on timber trees and utilisation has been generated. The need for a revision of the book was felt so as to bring the information up to date. Mr. S. C. Lim, a wood anatomist with more than 28 years of experience working with timber in FRIM, and Dr. R. C. K. Chung, a botanist in FRIM, have volunteered to carry out a revision of the book which took more than a year to complete. Besides the inclusion of an appendix and new information on many timber species, taxonomic changes during the last two decades are also incorporated in all the species mentioned in this book. Exotic plantation timbers such as acacia, teak, yemane, etc. which were excluded in the original book can be found in this new revision. I am confident that this revised edition of the book with its more comprehensive and updated information will, just like the first edition, prove very useful to readers, especially those from the timber industry and having a keen interest on Malaysian timbers. Finally, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Messrs. S. C. Lim and R. C. K. Chung for carrying out the revision, a heavy task that they have ably undertaken in addition to their research.

Until then the evolving image of the ocean had been moulded as much by the cartographer’s whimsy as by the explorer’s survey. Using a cornucopia of rare and beautiful maps, this book traces the exploration and charting of the Earth’s largest ocean, weaving an odyssey stretching from Japan and the Philippines on the west, Australia and New Zealand in the south, and east through the varied islands of Oceania, including Tahiti, Hawaii, and even the ‘island’ of California. The story of the maps was often the story of the explorers and islanders themselves.

In years long gone, forestry revolved mostly around the regulation of trade in forest products, and the collection of appropriate fees and royalties for the State from the extraction of these State resources. As time progressed and the exploitation of Sabah’s rich forest resources increased, so too did the understanding of the resource in terms of both its incredible richness as well as its productive limitations. It is because of this ever increasing knowledge about the function and natural capacity of Sabah’s forests that Sustainable Forest Management has evolved. Today Forestry in Sabah is moving fast towards the realisation of a vision of Sustainable Forest Management. This means that detailed research and knowledge of the resource, as well as careful long-term planning, underpin all forest based activities. This has had a most dramatic impact on Sabah”s permanent production forests, where long-term licence agreements with private sector organisations have bound these ultimate beneficiaries of resource exploitation into research, conservation, minimal impact harvesting, and long-term restoration of the forest resource. The growing understanding of Sabah’s forests has had additional positive benefits in terms of knowledge of the unique wonders and biodiversity hidden within them, with corresponding spin-offs in biotechnology, recreation & tourism, and creating a healthy environment to live in. In its efforts to raise awareness about the significance of forest resources in Sabah and their management in today’s day and age, the Sabah Forestry Department has commissioned this latest edition of Forestry in Sabah as an insight into the changing world of forestry. This edition aims to give an overview of the diverse aspects of Forestry in Sabah, starting with an introduction to the amazing forests of Sabah, through to the history and evolution of forest management today, closing with some insights into the forests of the future. In reality the information in this book is meant as an easy-read summary only, and a general overview of forestry activities in Sabah. More detailed facts are available in the Department’s annual reports and many other books and publications, of which readers are invited to peruse. This Centennial Edition was also designed to coincide with the laying of the Sabah Forestry Department’s Time-Capsule, which is planned to provide a record for future generations of forestry activities at the turn of the 21st Century, and planned to be reopened at the beginning of the next century. In light of this, sincere thanks and appreciation are accorded to the many dedicated personnel involved in the compilation of this edition and in all the accomplishments throughout Forestry in Sabah today
