Rafflesia: Magnificent Flower of Sabah

BK2473 Rafflesia flowers are the largest in the world. Yet the plant body of these incredible plants consist of only tissue strands within the Tetrastigma vines they parasitise, and the flower itself. The present account serves as an introduction to these amazing plants, which have enthralled all who have seen them. Not surprisingly, much attention has been focused on recent findings of Raffiesia, particularly in Sabah where it has become a symbol of conservation. Rafflesia not only represents rare plants highly vulnerable to destruction and extinction, but also the inadequate state of our knowledge of the rain forest. Time is running short for tropical forests in many places in the world, and we need all the scientific information we can gather to help in formulating sound approaches to forestry and conservation. Although the specific aspects of the biology of RafflesiJare insufficiently understood, there is now enough evidence to emphasize that its survival will only be guaranteed by adequate habitat conservation. It should be recognised that the conservation of Raffiesia is not an end in itself, but is linked to the conservation of many rain forest species which occur as sparsely distributed populations or individuals. The present book seeks therefore to highlight Rafflesia because of its attraction and its value as a symbol of conservation. In the book is assembled a general profile of Rafflesia, a genus of some sixteen species, consisting of information on its structure, biology and conservation. By intention many colour photographs, which capture the beauty and uniqueness of the seplants, have been used; after all, the fascination of these plants, which are not easily found in flower, is near-impossible to express with words alone. It is hoped that this book will help bring about a greater awareness of the value and importance of forest conservation, and of Rafflesia in particular. By caring for the rain forest we conserve much that is precious: clean water, undepleted soils and an entire heritage of plants and animals. With such a rich ecosystem soundly managed we not only secure environmental well-being, but also preserve the many options that can come with scientific advancement, such as in the development of natural products and medicines. Amid all our efforts to achieve sound, conservation and a- balanced development, the case of afflesia stands out clearly. Here, in this book, are the facts of this truly magnificent group of plants. Let us admire the beauty of Rafflesiaf lowers and understand the vulnerability of this fascinating group of plants and its habitat, the tropical rain forest.
