A scientific Journey through Borneo is a series of research expeditions initiated by Universiti Kebangsaan Sabah Campus, Sabah Parks and Sabah Wildlife Department in 1988 at Tabin Wildlife Reserve Sabah. This was followed by Tawau Hills Parks Sabah (1989), Danum Valley Sabah (1990), Sayap-Kinabalu Park Sabah (1992), Mount Silam and Darvel Bay Sabah (1994), Bario Sarawak (1995) and Crocker Range National Park (1999). Participants of these expeditions comprise researchers from a variety of disciplines drawn from local and foreign universities, research agencies and government departments. These expeditions, besides providing researchers with the opportunity to collect and collate scientific data on the biological complexity, occurrence, distribution and ecological relations species found within the tropical ecosystems, have generated voluminous vital information needed for effective conservarion and management of wildlife reserves and other threatened habitats in Borneo. To effectively manage a hugely diverse conservation area such as the Crocker Range National Park in Sabah, relevant new scientific informetion on its complex ecosystems and soecies is essential. Volume 1 looks at the floral and faunal species collected or observed in the tropical rainforest habitats of the park as well as the ecological changes and water quality of the river systems flowing through it. Volume 2 goes beyond the natural components of the ecosystem by delving into the socio-cultural activities that impact biodiversity directly from its use and exploitation or indirectly through adverse environmental changes. It also looks at the agricultural and land tenure systems of indigenous communities living within the vicinity, their use and dependence on the diverse natural resources found within the boundaries of the park and how rapid changes in socio-cultural norms are affecting the indigenous communities.
